AWS User Group UK Meetup #48 – 19th May

May 19, 2021 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Free

We have two great talks and a panel discussion for you in May. Firstly, we are delighted to have Dimple Dalby (@dimpledalby) & Mathew Wilkin from Comparethemarket.com who will be sharing their insights on running self managed K8 clusters. Our second session will be a lighting talk by Satish Natarajan (@nsatishk) from Deloitte, who will be looking at security tooling as well as best practices in relation to Guard Duty and Security Hub.

Our panel discussion will include Isabel Huerga Ayza (@isahuerga) – Senior DA UKI , Clive Nethersole (@cnethersole) – Thames Valley AWS Organiser and Phil Bashford (@philipbasford) – Ipswich AWS Organiser.

Talk 1:

Running self managed K8s clusters in production on AWS

At comparethemarket.com, we have been running K8s in production for over 2 years now. With 100% of our services running on AWS and 70% of that on K8s, this journey has been less than easy. This talk would discuss the setup, pros and cons of running self managed clusters and what the future looks like for us.

Dimple is currently a Tech Lead for Cloud Platform and Operations at comparethemarket.com. Her team builds, runs and automates compute platforms for microservices with focus on AWS based infrastructure and Kubernetes. In the past, she worked as a DevOps consultant for various companies helping their enterprise clients in their cloud transformation journey to AWS. She is a strong supporter of women in tech and is a volunteer coach at cobebar.

Mathew is currently a Senior Engineer for Cloud Platform and Operations at Comparethemarket.com . He is an ardent fan of all things kubernetes, and has extensive experience of running kubernetes in production. Before joining Comparethemarket, he was a programmer at IBM. Coming from a developer background helps him understand and focus on developer needs and user friendly UX on the automation front. This is his first public talk, and aims to do a lot more of them this year.

Talk 2:

AWS Security & Compliance: A general overview including an introduction to GuardDuty and Security Hub

We are all, now more than ever, spending more time online in our day-to-day lives. More and more startups are using the power of cloud to set up their next disruptive product. The concept of managing information on the cloud and protecting it, thankfully, is not something new and every cloud vendor has an abundance of security tooling available for us to leverage when setting up our next big cloud project. So with that in mind the following presentation aims to provide you with a general overview of AWS Security Tooling and the roles that each of the tools play in the Security & Compliance lifecycle. We will also deep dive a bit into two tools, namely Guard duty and Security Hub.

Satish is a Lead Cloud Architect within Deloitte’s Cloud Engineering practice with over 14 years’ experience in the technology industry.

He has a proven track record of delivering complex cloud based solutions for clients cross industry, incorporating industry best practice and well-architected solutions.

Satish is an AWS EMEA Ambassador and writes blogs and articles, delivers public presentations and evangelizes cloud on social media.
