Simplifying Stateful Serverless Architectures (Konstantin Knauf, Ververica)
Platforms like KNative and FaaS have solved most of the challenges of dealing with stateless applications. Still, when it comes to managing state, developers quickly end up designing and maintaining a complicated architecture without achieving consistency guarantees in the presence of failure. Stateful Functions (StateFun) – developed under the umbrella of Apache Flink – provides consistent messaging and durable state without compromising the serverless experience. Like a database, it exposes its capabilities to application developers in a platform and language agnostic manner: StateFun does not mind if you deploy your application as a set of Python functions on your preferred FaaS platform, a single Spring Boot application on Kubernetes or a mixture of both. In this demo-centric session, you will learn about the core ideas behind the project and you will see how to write, deploy and monitor a simple Stateful Functions application.

As Head of Product at Ververica, Konstantin supports multiple product teams working on Apache Flink, Stateful Functions and Ververica Platform in both feature discovery as well as delivery. He is currently focusing on Stateful Functions, the youngest project of the Apache Flink family. Previously, he has been leading the solutions architecture team, helping our clients as well as the Open Source community to get the most out of Apache Flink.

Kubernetes: How to automatically detect and deal with deprecated APIs (Stepan Stipl, DoiT International)
As Kubernetes evolves, so do its APIs. Some are replaced with newer versions, some even removed completely. This can be a pretty unpleasant surprise when you upgrade your clusters; it can even disrupt your services. In this talk, we’ll aim to understand this problem in more detail – why you should care, how to detect if you’re affected, and what to do about it. We’ll introduce Kubent, an open-source tool that automates the detection of deprecated APIs and looks more closely under the hood, and what tricks it uses to do the job.

Stepan is a Senior Cloud Architect at DoiT International, helping companies design and build scalable & reliable services in the cloud. A big advocate of modern cloud-native architecture, OSS and Kubernetes (working with K8s since before 1.0). He contributes to open source software, Kubent being one of his recent projects. Stepan occasionally blogs about tech, and you can find him on Twitter – @stepanstipl.
